MilkWorks strives to create a healthier community by empowering families in Nebraska to reach their breastfeeding goals. When MilkWorks opened in 2001, breastfeeding rates in this country were some of the lowest in history. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, and the inclusion of breastfeeding support and breast pumps as part of Women’s Preventive Services, those rates have gone up significantly. MilkWorks is dedicated to continuing their advocacy by finding new ways to reach more families in need of support. Breastfeeding is something women have done since the beginning of time, yet it is still a skill that must be learned and practiced.
MilkWorks is proud to have a knowledgeable, compassionate staff who develop trusting relationships with the clients they serve. Their goal is to provide each family with the care they need to meet their personal feeding goals. Knowing that breastfeeding is seldom perfect, and they understand that each family has unique breastfeeding concerns. In 2015, due to a growing need, MilkWorks expanded and opened a location in Omaha, Nebraska and currently have outreach programs in several smaller communities in Nebraska.
World Breastfeeding Week
August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week and this year you can help MilkWorks Close the Gap of breastfeeding support in Nebraska. During the 2024 state legislative session, LB 1106 and LB 1107 were passed as a part of the Health & Human Services Committee package.
These bills mean stronger coverage for women and children enrolled in Nebraska Medicaid, including expanded access to breast pumps, guaranteed quality of a personal use breast pump, and a minimum of 10 lactation care visits per covered individual.
New and Expanding Services
MilkWorks offers many free and low cost resources to help moms reach their breastfeeding goals. They also offer a wide variety of virtual services, including telehealth lactation care, to continue to serve a growing and changing population.
- Lactation Consultations – MilkWorks offers expert care from their team of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC’s), including a comprehensive feeding assessment and continuous follow-up care until your baby is feeding well. Appointments available Monday – Saturday, in-person or virtually.
- Support Groups & Classes – Come and join other parents at one of their many support groups. Discuss the different phases of parenthood, share information, and make new and meaningful friendships. MilkWorks offer free and low cost classes that cover breastfeeding basics, tips for returning to work, and how-to baby wearing techniques, adding more classes and groups every year. - Breastfeeding Information Center, available online 24/7, is based on years of experience, current best practices, and the latest research on lactation care. The Information Center features over 100 individual resources to meet you wherever you may be on your breastfeeding journey.
- Personal Use Breast Pumps – MilkWorks offers a selection of high-quality breast pumps for families to choose from. Feel free to drop in or call and have your breast pump shipped directly to you. MilkWorks Breastfeeding Educators are on site to help with any questions you may have about your breast pump purchase. They also offer curbside pick-up for convenience.
